Day trip “Hike around Agiassos”

(Level of difficulty: Easy)

Circular walk Karini – Agiassos - Karini

Total Distance of the hike:  9 km
Duration including stops:  6-7 hours

The trip: We start our exhilarating hike in the tiny hamlet of Karini, which looks like an oasis with over 600 year old plane trees. From here we walk along passing an old olive press and through an idyllic river valley with big, shady trees and natural pools. We continue on old tracks through olive groves towards the traditional village Asomatos. If we are lucky, the small village shop is open for chilled drinks and we can rest a while at the fountain in the shade.

From Asomatos we hike through a diverse landscape of olive groves and woods to Agiassos - with Mount Olympos always visible in the background. In Agiassos – perhaps the most fascinating mountain village of the island - we have time for a nice stroll through the village shops.  We especially like the handmade ceramics (be careful: there are also cheap ceramics from China, which can be easily identified if you look at the price). We also find locally collected herbs and tea, excellent olive oil, cheese and honey and many other culinary delights. We stop in one of the traditional kafeneia for a tasty meze (delicious snacks, traditionally served with ouzo or wine).

After the meal we would like to show you the famous church of the Virgin Mary (visited by many Orthodox pilgrims for its miracle working icon). Then we head back down to Karini on old pilgrims’ tracks. In Karini we finish our trip with a cool drink or a coffee.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation by arrangement.

Price for the hike: 24€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 36€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Lunch in Agiassos incl. wine or beer and water, coffee or refreshment in Karini) is 18€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

If you want to see the church in Agiassos you need to wear appropriate clothes - long trousers or skirt and no bare shoulders or midriffs! (wear a sleeved top, or you could bring a cotton scarf to cover up)

Day trip “ Agiassos and Mount Olympus”

(Level of difficulty: Medium)

Circular walk Agiassos – Mount Olympus - Agiassos

Total Distance of the hike: 10 km,
Duration including stops: 6-7 hours

The trip: We start our tour of the summit in the village of Agiassos, one of the most  fascinating mountain villages of the island of Lesvos. This lovely village is located about 400m above sea level. On ancient Kalderimi (old pilgrim and donkey paths) and narrow tracks we head up to Mount Olympus, at 968m the highest mountain of the island. During the ascent we have stunning views to the impressive White Mountains and the surrounding countryside. Mount Olympus is also known locally as Profitis Ilias because, like many high peaks in Greece, it has a small chapel dedicated to Profitis Ilias (the Prophet Elijah). At the top of the mountain, on a limestone plateau the summit is dominated by a large, white cross and the eponymous small chapel. From up here we have a breathtaking view of large parts of the island and - on clear days - beyond. We stop here to rest and enjoy the view.  Slowly we start our descent. We arrive further down at a beautiful view point where we have arranged a welcoming table, covered with small Greek delicacies. Here we rest a while and enjoy the tasty picnic and cool drinks.  Feeling stronger after the delicious meal, we start the descent to Agiassos. Once in Agiassos we take time for a stroll through the shady alleys and shops. If you wish, you can visit the famous pilgrimage church of the Virgin Mary (visited by many Orthodox pilgrims for its miracle working icon). In one of the local kafenia we relax after the exhilarating mountain hike and enjoy a coffee or ouzo.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Price for the hike: 25€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 37€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

As we climb uphill more than 600m you will need proper hiking shoes and a good physical constitution.

If you want to see the church in Agiassos you need to wear appropriate clothes - long trousers or skirt and no bare shoulders or midriffs! (wear a sleeved top, or you could bring a cotton scarf to cover up.)

Day trip “ The Three Monasteries ”

(Level of difficulty: Easy)

Circular walk Kalloni – Three Monasteries - Kalloni

Total Distance of the hike: 10 km,
Duration including stops: 7-8 hours

The trip: The meeting point for our tour is Kalloni, from here we drive to the great bridge behind Kalloni. We start the hike walking on an ancient cobbled track through the hilly countryside to the women’s monastery Myrsiniotissas. This beautiful monastery with its secluded courtyard ran a secret school during the Turkish occupation. Unfortunately, the monastery is not always open – if we are lucky, we can go inside and see it. Our hike continues on the old pilgrims’ route to the Moni Limonos. This monastery of friars was already built before the Turkish occupation. It was often destroyed and rebuilt; the current building dating back to 1527. Moni Limonos is probably the most interesting monastery in Lesvos – we take some time to look around this splendid building. In the pleasant café we sit down for a coffee or refreshment. Once refreshed we resume our hike, with stunning views of the bay of Kalloni through picturesque lava stone formations to the approximately 500 year old monastery Metochi.

After we have seen this monastery we head towards Kalloni, always with scenic views of the bay and to the mountains on the other side of the Gulf. We pass the small village of Dafia and finally reach the starting point.

From here it is only a short drive to Skala Kallonis, where we enjoy a late lunch on the beach. Depending on the season we can try the famous sardines from the gulf.  After lunch we spend some time at the beach, relax on a sunbed or go for a swim in the shallow water.

Minimum of 2 people required, meeting point is Kalloni or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Price for the hike: 25€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 37€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Coffee or refreshment in the monastery cafe, lunch in Skala Kallonis  incl. wine or beer and water) is 18€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

If you want to see the monasteries you need to wear appropriate clothes - long trousers or skirt and no bare shoulders or midriffs! (wear a sleeved top, or you could bring a cotton scarf to cover up.)

Day trip “Hot Springs and Monastery Damandriou”

(Level of difficulty: Easy)

Circular walk Polichnitos – Monastery Damandriou - Polichnitos

Total Distance of the hike: 10 km,
Duration including stops: 6-7 hours

The trip: We start our hike in the village of Polichnitos. We walk on a narrow asphalt road passing a number of olive presses and and a small camp for Greek soldiers on National Service, before reaching the Hot Springs of Polichnitos. The Hot Springs are well known and highly appreciated by locals and visitors. The facility consists of two bath houses built during the Turkish occupation, modernized more recently, the original ancient buildings, the wells and springs outside and a beautiful old three-arched bridge worth seeing. The healing and relaxing effect of the hot mineral-rich water is remarkable. The clear and odorless water comes out of the ground at a temperature of 67 - 92  oC and is naturally cooled to around 40 oC for the baths. It is rich in minerals and said to be effective against a number of diseases and ailments. The quality of the thermal water is comparable to the famous mineral springs of Wiesbaden in Germany or Bath Spa in England.  You will have the chance for a bath at the end of the tour. First, however, we walk over the old bridge leaving the spa behind and continue through a varied landscape. On ancient paths we hike along a riverbed and majestic, old olive groves. Our route takes us to the garden oasis Agios Georgios with its small monastery. If we are lucky, someone is there and we can look around the beautiful garden. In any case, we use the opportunity to take a rest under some shady trees. We continue now on one of the high plateaus of the island - about 200m above sea level. Moving onward, we have stunning views of the Gulf of Kalloni and the mountain village of Lisvori. Finally we reach the monastery Damandriou - where ice cold drinks are waiting for us.  The monastery dates from the Byzantine period, decayed over the years and was probably rebuilt in the 17th century. The monastery is still in operation and can be visited – which you may like to do whilst we are here.

On our way back to the 21st century we hike over narrow paths down towards Polichnitos. At the beginning the path leads us through beautiful, old olive groves, and later through the agricultural plain of Polichnitos. Back at the Hot Springs, we have the opportunity to take a bath in the pleasant waters of the spa. Even in hot summer weather the bath is pure relaxation!  Then we enjoy a light lunch on the shaded terrace, before walking back to Polichnitos.

Minimum of 2 people required,  start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation upon arrangement.

Price for the hike: 23€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 34€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Coffee or refreshment at the monastery Damandriou, lunch at the Hot Springs incl. wine or beer and water; entrance fee for the spa) is 24€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

If you want to see the monastery you need to wear appropriate clothes, like long trousers or a skirt and no bare shoulders or midriffs! (wear a sleeved top, or you could bring a cotton scarf to cover up.)

(Level of difficulty: Easy)

Circular walk Achladeri – Waterfalls of Pesa - Achladeri

Total Distance of the hike: 11 km,
Duration including stops: 6-7 hours

The trip: We start our walk at the beach near Achladeri on the Gulf of Kalloni and hike through olive groves slowly uphill. We pass a ridge and continue on a beautiful grassy glade with spectacular views of the Gulf of Kalloni. The path now leads down through olive groves, passing ruins of abandoned stone houses and walls. The area here is still rich in wildlife – well known by the locals - and we find many empty cartridge cases that indicate a favourite hobby of many Greeks. We now turn inland and walk on a dirt road - the Gulf of Kalloni in the background - up to the waterfall of Pesa. The creek has much water, even in summer, with sapphire green and turquoise pools, ideal for a quick bathe. A shaded picnic area under tall pine trees invites you to stay for a while. Here some ice cold drinks are waiting for us. You will for sure appreciate these refreshments after the ascent. We rest some time here, listening to the frogs and watching the many butterflies and dragonflies on the water.

The descent to the coast is easy. On the sandy path we walk back to the Gulf of Kalloni. Through the beautiful, agricultural plain, we hike to the sea and then walk along the quiet waters of the Gulf, back to the starting point.

A short drive brings us in a few minutes to Achladeri. The local taverna is well known for its good, homemade and traditional cuisine. There we enjoy a late lunch.

From the beach you can see the remains of the port facility and houses of ancient Pyrra on a calm day. You can also find stranded fragments of fossilized redwoods here. If you feel like having a swim you can take a dip in the Gulf. Here at the beach, we end the day.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation upon arrangement.

Price for the hike: 24€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 36€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

The trip: We start our hike in Agia Pareskevi and leave the village on old kalderimi (pilgrim- or donkey paths). We cross Tsiknias River and reach the temple area of Klopedi. The fenced archeological excavation could be visited, if you wish. Nevertheless, most of the excavation can be easily seen from outside the fence. We continue the amazing monastery of Metochi Taxiarchis. The remaining monk, Father Ignatius, is normally there and very happy to show visitors the tiny monastery and his enchanted flower and vegetable garden. If we are lucky, he will sing just for us in his church.

We continue our hike on dirt roads and narrow paths up and down, crossing  the Tsiknias River once again, this time on old stepping stones. We walk through ancient olive groves – in spring they are completely covered in flowers – and reach the famous bridge of Kremasti. This bridge was built in the 15th Century and is one of the most impressive historical constructions on Lesvos.

Small paths and kalderimi lead us back to the village of Agia Pareskevi. The place is well known for its lamb specialties, which we may want to try in the local kafeneon, where we will sit down for a late lunch.

Feeling stronger after the meal we should not miss the chance to visit the olive oil museum in the village. In the amazing environment of an old olive press building we can learn about the traditional production of olive oil. In the café at the museum we enjoy a coffee or ouzo and finish our day.

As there are no tavernas or shops available during our hike, please bring enough water.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Price for the hike: 25€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 37€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

We reach the stunning temple area of the Vasilika Chalinados, which appears unexpectedly between the olive trees. The whole area is still in a good condition: many of the columns are standing and you can feel the mystic atmosphere of the place.
