Hiking in the north

Day trip “ Valley of the Mills “

(Level of difficulty: Easy)

Circular walk Petra – Petri – Valley of the Mills - Petra

Total Distance of the hike: 10 km,
Duration including stops: 6-7 hours

The trip: We start our hike in Petra, in the north of the island. A small asphalt road leads us up to the little village of Petri, which is a lovely mountain village with narrow streets and old traditional stone houses. We rest a bit from the ascent - maybe have a refreshment - and enjoy the beautiful view over the plain and down to the bay of Petra.

After the break we continue to the Valley of the Mills. In a washed out creek bed we find volcanic basalt columns and stair-like ruins. These are witnesses of a long gone era when, there were 18 water mills in total. In the lower parts of the valley we find a cluster of three mills. It is probable they were built for a settlement during the medieval or early Ottoman period. Countless butterflies accompany us on our way. The scent of the Mediterranean herbs is breathtaking. Along the stream bed, we now follow an ancient cobbled path and walk back to Petra.

Here we enjoy a light lunch in one of our favourite tavernas at the bottom of the rock. The striking rock and the church of the Glykfylousa Panagia (Our Lady of the Sweet Kiss) perched on top, is the town’s landmark, which also gave the village its name (Greek petra = stone). Climbing up the old steps to the church is highly recommended: not only the church itself and its surroundings are worth seeing, but you also have fantastic views over the village, the sea and the coastline.  After our lunch we have the opportunity to visit the beautifully restored mansion “Spiti Vareltzidaina”. A stroll through the beautiful old streets down to the Platia for a coffee or ouzo with sea view completes our day.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation upon arrangement.

Price for the hike: 25€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 38€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Lunch in Petra incl. wine or beer and water, entrance fee to the mansion, coffee, ouzo or refreshment in Petra) is 22€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

If you want to see the church in Petra  you need to wear appropriate clothes - long trousers or skirt and no bare shoulders or midriffs! (wear a sleeved top, or you could bring a cotton scarf to cover up)

Day trip “Aegean Sea and Olives”

(Level of difficulty: Easy)

Circular walk around Skala Sikaminias and visit to the olive oil museum in Agia Pareskevi

Total Distance of the hike 8 km
Duration including stops: 7-8 hours

The trip: The meeting point for our tour is Kalloni, from there we head north. Our hike begins in Skala Sikaminias, a beautiful fishing town on the north coast of Lesvos. When we return at the end of our hike we will look at the lovely port and the tiny port chapel. But now we want to start the hike and leave the village to the east along the coast and walk to the beach of Kagia. We stop here for a quick swim for those who want to and continue on old donkey paths (kalderimi) leaving the beach behind as we hike inland. Don’t forget to turn, look back and enjoy the beautiful view of Skala Sikaminias. We pass an old stone cistern and come to an idyllic, small waterfall. Along a creek we go through lovely smelling pine and olive woods with a mystic atmosphere. The circular walk brings us back to Skala Sikaminias.

Now is the time to savour a nice stroll around the harbour and the small streets behind. The little chapel at the harbour is very picturesque and surely worth a photograph. Later we sit down at the harbour and enjoy a light lunch in one of our favourite tavernas. After the meal we drive now through the mountains to Agia Pareskevi, a charming mountain village in the hills above sea level. The village has long been considered one of the richest in Greece - mainly through agriculture and cattle-breeding. We stop at the edge of the village, where an impressive olive oil museum in a former olive oil factory from the 19th century was first opened in 2006. The building itself is already an impressive industrial monument, but also  the  functional machinery and well explained exhibits are worth seeing. After the museum we take a coffee or a refreshment in the little museum cafe before we start our return trip to Kalloni.

Minimum of 2 people required, meeting point is Kalloni or pick-up from your accommodation upon arrangement.

Price for the hike and the tour: 33€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 43€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Lunch in Skala Sikaminias  incl. wine or beer and water, transfer from and to Kalloni, entrance fee to the museum, coffee  or refreshment at the museum) is 26€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

Day trip “Petra and Saint Alexandros”

(Level of difficulty: Easy)

Circular walk Petra – Lafionas – Agios Alexandros - Petra

Total Distance of the hike: 15 km,
Duration including stops: 6-7 hours

The trip: We start our hike in Petra on the north coast of Lesvos. We walk past blooming gardens and later on through old olive groves until we reach the tiny mountain village of Lafionas. The village is located on the slopes of Roudi mountain – originally built here for safe protection against pirates. We ascend on cobblestone streets, leave the village behind and reach a track with stunning panoramic views over the bay of Petra and the small islands just off the coast. The track leads us to the old church of Saint Alexandros; the sarcophagus of the saint is still located just outside the church doors. Agios Alexandros church is a mystical place –inviting us to settle down for a while and relax.

We continue our hike and circle Roudi mountain – with great views to the coast and romantic valleys – until we reach Lafionas again. In the local kafeneon we sit down and enjoy a tasty Meze (small plates of Greek specialties with drinks) and of course the view from the terrace over the bay of Petra.

Feeling stronger we descend down to Petra, where we finish our trip at the plateia and enjoy a coffee or ouzo and let the world pass by.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Price for the hike: 25€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 38€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

Day trip “Mount Lepetymnos”

(Level of difficulty: Medium)

Circular walk Lepetymnos – Peak – Argennos - Lepetymnos

Total Distance of the hike: 13 km,
Duration including stops: 6-7 hours

The trip: We start our hike on top of the mountain in the village of Lepetymnos (334m above sea level). From here we reach the ruins of Chalikas.  Our path leads us in steep serpentines to the old, Turkish water well of Kryta. We take the chance to top up our water bottles and rest for a while in the shade. The steepest part of our hike starts here, taking us upwards until we reach the peak of Mount Lepetymnos (968m above sea level). A stunning 360 degree panorama rewards us for all the strain.

After an extended break we continue our hike and reach the second peak of the mountain massif (Mount Lepetymnos has two peaks). We descend over stony slopes and dirt roads to the mountain village of Argennos. We will probably feel hungry by that time, so we settle down in one of the kafeneons and enjoy some Meze (delicious Greek specialties, served on small plates with drinks). The way back to our starting point leads us on easy tracks along the narrow asphalt road.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Price for the hike: 26€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 39€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).
