Hiking in the south

Day trip “Vrisa and Vatera”

(Level of difficulty: Easy)

Circular walk Vrisa – Vatera – Vrisa

Total Distance of the hike: 11 km,
Duration including stops: 7-8 hours

The trip: We begin this scenic hike in Vrisa, at the plateia of the traditional little village. From there we head down on old trails through pine forests and olive groves to the long, sandy beach of Vatera. Throughout the trek down there are superb views to the sea and the islands at the horizon. During the spring and summer the fragrance of the aromatic herbs and flowers growing all around is inescapable.

Arriving at Vatera beach, we relax with a long sunbathe on a sunbed and a swim in the clear blue sea. The cook at one of our favourite tavernas at the beach prepares a tasty, light lunch for us. Feeling stronger after an appetizing meal we slowly make our way along the beach until we come to the river Almiropotamos. It is a good place for bird watchers as many species live and nest here. Also turtles can be found at the river mouth - on some days we counted more than 60 turtles at one spot.

On the way back to Vrisa we pass an old defence tower “Pirgos”, from which the residents in times past were warned of approaching pirates. Back in Vrisa we sit down in one of the kafeneia at the central plateia and enjoy a coffee or other refreshment.

The little Natural History Museum at Vrisa, houses an interesting collection of fossils, rocks, stuffed birds and animals, with displays explaining the local prehistory and a model of a giant prehistoric tortoise.  Depending on the opening hours we can visit the museum before we start our hike or at the end of the day.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time and meeting point or collection from your accommodation by arrangement.

Price for the hike: 23€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 33€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Lunch in Vatera incl. wine or beer and water, coffee or refreshment in Vrisa, entrance fee to the museum) is 21€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

Day trip “The South around Melinda”

(Level of difficulty: Medium)

Circular walk Melinda – Panagia Krifti - Melinda

Total Distance of the hike:  10 km
Duration including stops: 7-8 hours

The trip: We start our hike at Melinda on the south coast. Melinda is a tiny hamlet with perhaps two dozen inhabitants, six kilometres west of Plomari. First we follow the narrow asphalt road uphill towards Paleochori. When the road turns inland, we stay on the coastal sand track. From here we have spectacular views of the steep coast and the deep blue sea. Far below - unfortunately unreachable by us - are beautiful little beaches. On a clear day you can see the island of Chios approximately 50 km away, and the Turkish coastline more to the east. On a steep path we now climb down to the amazing cave chapel of Panagia Krifti - the sanctuary is a cave! Close to the chapel there are hot thermal springs that flow in a natural pool at sea level. You can enter the crystal clear water over a small jetty. Here we stop for a revitalizing break.  If you like, you may  bathe in the natural hot pool and then cool off in the sea, which is a memorable experience.

Pleasantly refreshed, we climb the path uphill through shady olive groves to the small village of Paleochori. Some corners of the "main street" are so narrow that you hardly fit through with a standard car, but friendly Greek people are always at hand to help – and watch. We have a coffee or refreshment in one of the small kafeneion and relax from the steep climb.

Now comes the easier part of the hike. We head down towards the sea, passing a modern olive press and little further a very old oil press which is still in operation. If the doors are open we may have the chance to look inside and watch the process. Through olive groves we walk back to Melinda.

In Melinda, we now enjoy a late lunch in our favourite taverna overlooking the sea. After we have eaten some tasty Greek food we can enjoy some relaxation on the sunbeds at this beautiful beach and a refreshing swim in the sea. The beach consists of multi-coloured pebbles, you may want to collect a few as a reminder of that lovely day.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation by arrangement.

Price for the hike: 24€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 36€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Coffee or refreshment in Paleochori, lunch in Melinda incl. wine or beer and water) is 18€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

This hike includes a rather steep descent to Panagia Krifti. Proper hiking boots and a good mobility are recommended.

Day trip “The old Vrisa - Nigida”

(Level of difficulty: Medium)

Circular walk Vrisa – Langada – Nigida - Vrisa

Total Distance of the hike: 13 km,
Duration including stops: 7-8 hours

The trip: We begin our walk in the charming village of Vrisa at the lovely plateia. We follow a clear stream through a valley called Langada, which is well known for its ancient olive groves, full of flowers in spring and early summer.  On the way we may stop at a quiet place at the river to cool down our feet and to watch the numerous butterflies and dragon flies. We continue through the valley, turn right uphill until we reach the peak of the little mountain. From here we begin a little expedition to one of the waterfalls of Vrisa. If there is water (in summer it may be dry) it falls down over 100m. In summer, even without water, the area is absolutely amazing and well worth seeing. There are many birds of prey nesting in this place and we will spend some time there hopefully watching them.

From here we continue to the old village of Vrisa, called Nigida. The place is abandoned but the atmosphere in Nigida, especially in the ruins of the old church, is amazing.

Next we slowly make our way towards Agia Anna. This little chapel is built on top of a massive rock, overlooking the whole area. We enjoy not only the stunning view from the chapel but also a delicious picnic that has been prepared for us.

Feeling stronger after the tasty meal we hike down on the gravel road towards Vrisa.

Minimum of 2 people. Start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Price for the hike: 23€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 33€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Picnic at Agia Anna incl. wine or beer and water, resfreshment in Vrisa, entrance fee to museum) is 17€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

Day trip “Melinda and Kournela”

(Level of difficulty: medium)

Circular walk Melinda – Kournela - Melinda

Total Distance of the hike:  9 km,
Duration including stops:  5-6 hours

The trip: We start our hike in Melinda, on the south coast of Lesvos. We walk through old olive groves – in spring and early summer full of flowers – and ascend slowly through the lovely valley. After crossing the stream, our path takes us steeply uphill to the mountain village of Kournela. While we climb up our way offers us several breathtaking views to the coast, the village of Melinda and the settlement of Paleochori on the opposite side of the valley. There are not many residents living in the old village of Kournela; due to its remote location with no drivable connection to the coast it is very quiet here. If we are lucky, we can get a coffee or refreshment in the local bar. After a break and a good look around - you may find some appealing views or close up subjects for your photos – we descend, until we reach the riverbed. Our path leads us along ruins of ancient buildings, an old mill and an interesting well. Down in the valley we can enjoy the fauna and flora around us, until we reach our starting point, Melinda.

You will probably be ready for a refreshing bathe in the clear water and a little rest on the sunbeds. Feeling hungry, we sit down in one of the fish tavernas at the beach and enjoy a tasty meal on the terrace, overlooking the sea. Maybe a glass of ouzo or chilled white wine will finish our day.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Price for the hike: 23€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 31€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

The extra-charge for our 👑 package including lunch with wine or beer and water in Melinda is 16€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

Day trip “Agios Fokas and Vatera”

(Level of difficulty: easy)

Circular walk Agios Fokas – Profitis Ilias – Agios Fokas

Total Distance of the hike: 12 km,
Duration including stops: 6-7 hours

The trip: Our walk starts in the small fishing harbour of Agios Fokas. We turn inland and walk on tracks up to the highest point of the area. A tiny, white church on the peak, a fantastic view over the long, sandy beach of Vatera, the mountainous landscape of Plomari in the distance: this is Profitis Ilias. We enjoy a break then slowly continue our walk until we reach the river Almiropotamos. It is a good place for bird watchers as many species live and nest here. Also turtles can be found at the river mouth - on some days we have counted more than 60 turtles at one spot. We continue and reach the beach of Vatera, where we settle down in one of the tavernas overlooking the sea and enjoy a tasty lunch with some traditional Greek specialties and perhaps some fresh fish. After the meal we may fancy a swim in the clear water and a chance to relax a bit on the beach.

Our way back to Agios Fokas leads us through the nature park at the river Almiropotamos. Back at our starting point we visit the site of the temple of Dionysos (ancient god of wine and merrymaking) and a little Orthodox Christian chapel alongside. In the taverna of the fisherman Dimitris overlooking the small harbour, we sit down, enjoy a coffee or ouzo to finish our day.

Price for the hike: 23€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 34€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).
