Trips in the north

Day trip “The North around Molivos and Petra”

Duration including stops:  appr.  8 hours

The trip: We start our tour in Kalloni. From here we head north through the mountains to the charming village of Petra. The striking rock and the church of the Glykfylousa Panagia (Our Lady of the Sweet Kiss) perched on top, is the town’s landmark, which also gave the village its name (Greek πετρα petra = stone). Climbing up the old steps to the church is highly recommended: not only the church itself and its surroundings are worth seeing, but you also have fantastic views over the village, the sea and the coastline.  Coming down to the bottom of the church rock we now have the opportunity to visit the beautifully restored mansion “Spiti Vareltzidaina” originating in the Turkish period of the early 18th century.

We continue our trip to Molivos (also known in Greek as Mithimna). Molivos is a picturesque town in the north of the island of Lesvos. Narrow, cobbled streets – some shaded by wisteria with its enchanting smell - lead up to an imposing castle on top of the hill. The castle you see dates back to the Byzantine period (although an ancient castle on the same site was besieged by Achilles) and its impressive presence seem to dominate the town below. From the castle you have a fantastic view over the roofs of the village and down to the blue sea.

At the harbour we sit down for a delicious light lunch and watch the world go by. Feeling stronger after the meal we continue to the small fishing village of Skala Sikamineas. The small chapel Panagia Gorgona, overlooking the harbour, presents a very appealing picture and is a very popular with photographers – indeed the harbour is photogenic from all angles. Those of us who are not very keen on swimming or sun bathing may settle down in one of the lovely tavernas at the harbour and watch the fishermen doing their job. The rest of the group continues to the nearby beach Kagia, where we relax or swim in crystal clear water.

On the way back to Kalloni we take the mountain road and pass typical mountain villages like Pelopi; always with new views of the blue waters and the beautiful mountains. In Kalloni we end the day with a coffee or ouzo in one of the traditional kafeneia.

Minimum of 2 people required: Start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Price for the trip: 54€ per person.

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Entrance fee to the mansion in Petra and to Molivos castle, lunch in Molivos incl. wine or beer and water, coffee or refreshment in Kalloni) is 26€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

If you want to see the church in Petra you need to wear appropriate clothes - long trousers or skirt and no bare shoulders or midriffs! (wear a sleeved top, or you could bring a cotton scarf to cover up.)

Day trip “Aegean Sea and Olives”

Duration including stops: 7-8 hours

The trip: The meeting point for our tour is Kalloni, from there we head north. Our hike begins in Skala Sikaminias, a beautiful fishing town on the north coast of Lesvos. When we return at the end of our hike we will look at the lovely port and the tiny port chapel. But now we want to start the hike and leave the village to the east along the coast and walk to the beach of Kagia. We stop here for a quick swim for those who want to and continue on old donkey paths (kalderimi) leaving the beach behind as we hike inland. Don’t forget to turn, look back and enjoy the beautiful view of Skala Sikaminias. We pass an old stone cistern and come to an idyllic, small waterfall. Along a creek we go through lovely smelling pine and olive woods with a mystic atmosphere. The circular walk brings us back to Skala Sikaminias.

Now is the time to savour a nice stroll around the harbour and the small streets behind. The little chapel at the harbour is very picturesque and surely worth a photograph. Later we sit down at the harbour and enjoy a light lunch in one of our favourite tavernas. After the meal we drive now through the mountains to Agia Pareskevi, a charming mountain village in the hills above sea level. The village has long been considered one of the richest in Greece - mainly through agriculture and cattle-breeding. We stop at the edge of the village, where an impressive olive oil museum in a former olive oil factory from the 19th century was first opened in 2006. The building itself is already an impressive industrial monument, but also  the  functional machinery and well explained exhibits are worth seeing. After the museum we take a coffee or a refreshment in the little museum cafe before we start our return trip to Kalloni.

Minimum of 2 people required, meeting point is Kalloni or pick-up from your accommodation upon arrangement.

Price for the hike and the tour: 33€ p.p. (5 or more people) or 43€ p.p. (for 2-4 people).

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Lunch in Skala Sikaminias  incl. wine or beer and water, transfer from and to Kalloni, entrance fee to the museum, coffee  or refreshment at the museum) is 26€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

Day trip “Monasteries and Mountains”

Duration including stops:  appr.  8 hours

The trip: We start our tour in Kalloni. From here we drive to the nearby monastery of Leimonos. This monastery of friars was already built before the Turkish occupation. It was often destroyed and rebuilt; the current building dating back to 1527. Moni Limonos is one of the most interesting monasteries in Lesvos – we take some time to look around this splendid building.

We head north now and approach the highest mountain of the island, Mount Lepetymnos (968m). On small country roads we pass several traditional mountain villages and stop in one of them for a lunch break in a local kafenion. Feeling refreshed after our break we enter a steep gravel road, which leads us up to the top of Mount Lepetymnos. The last few meters we climb up on stairs cut in the rock. From above we enjoy the amazing view over large parts of the northern island, the sea and the mountains.

Back on the asphalt road we reach the monastery of Taxiarchis in Mantamados, an important place of pilgrimage for orthodox Christians. We visit the church with the beautiful icons and its beautiful courtyard. You should not leave the monastery before you tried the traditional sweets served in the local café: Loukoumades (small pastry with honey and nuts).

On the way back to Kalloni we cross the fertile farmland around Agia Pareskevi with stunning views to the Gulf of Kalloni. In Kalloni we end the day with a coffee or ouzo in one of the traditional kafeneia.

Minimum of 2 people required: Start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Price for the trip: 55€ per person.

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (lunch in a mountain village incl. wine or beer and water, local sweets in the monastery, coffee or ouzo in Kalloni) is 26€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

If you want to see the monasteries you need to wear appropriate clothes - long trousers or skirt and no bare shoulders or midriffs! (wear a sleeved top, or you could bring a cotton scarf to cover up.)
