Trips in the south

Day trip “Gulf of Gera and Tarti Beach”

Duration including stops:  appr. 8 hours

The trip: We start our tour in Keramia, a small village not far from the top end of the Gulf of Gera. We drive along the Gulf passing blooming gardens and marvellous old olive groves. All the time we enjoy beautiful views of the quiet waters of the gulf. The road leads us up towards Papados and an Olive Press Museum, constructed of local marble and stone. The press was built by Nikolaos Vranas, the grandfather of Greece’s famous poet Odysseas Elytis, one of the first steam-powered olive oil presses on the island. It was completely restored and converted into an interesting museum in 2009. Here we learn all there is worth knowing about the traditional production of olive oil on Lesvos. You also have the chance to purchase some excellent olive oil or olive oil products in the museum shop.

From Papados we continue to the old mountain villages Messagros and Skopelos. In Skopelos we can explore the remains of an ancient mosque, the charming plateia and the appealing church. If we are lucky and find someone to open the church, we can enter the underground channels under the church. People with claustrophobia, however, may prefer to wait outside.

After discovering these cultural sights we continue to the secluded bay of Tarti, probably one of the most amazing beaches of the island. At the beach we enjoy a bathe in the clear water before we sit down for a late lunch in a taverna at the beach, overlooking the bay.

We return by the same route - always with stunning views over the Gulf of Gera. Back at the starting point, Keramia, we sit down for a coffee or a drink in the local kafeneion to conclude the tour.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Price for the trip: 52€ per person.

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Entrance fee for the olive museum, lunch in Tarti incl. wine or beer and water, coffee or refreshment in Keramia) is 24€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

Day trip “The south around Plomari”

Duration including stops:  appr. 8 hours

The trip: We start our tour in Megali Limni, a dry former lake below Mount Olympus beside the Polichnitos- Keramia road. From here we drive on narrow roads through the fascinating mountains - always with stunning views of Mount Olympus and an almost alpine landscape. We pass the picturesque village Ambeliko and continue through Akrasi with its pretty plateia and on passing countless olive groves and deserted hillsides. Finally we arrive in Plomari, for many visitors and lovers of Lesvos one of their favourite spots. We park the car in the harbour and enjoy the magnificent view of Plomari’s houses stretching up the hill in front of us, before a stroll through the charming, little town and the streets behind the splendid harbour.

The most famous local product is the ouzo distilled in Plomari’s renowned distilleries, notably Barbayannis and Plomari Isidoros Arvanitis , which are considered by many to be the best in Greece. Barbayannis, on the road to Ag. Isidoros, has an Ouzo Museum where we can learn about the 150 years Barbayannis family history of ouzo distillation in Plomari.

We turn back, through Plomari and continue westward along the coast to Melinda, a tiny hamlet with perhaps two dozen inhabitants. Here we stop to enjoy the atmosphere and an idyllic break, swimming in crystal clear waters or relaxing on the multi-coloured pebble beach and savouring tasty food in one of the tavernas overlooking the sea.

After our late lunch we continue our tour on roads leading us through the traditional village of Palaiochori perched high on the edge of a valley, then drive on through the remote and fascinating mountainous areas of the south of Lesvos.

We stop in Akrasi and in one of the kafeneia where we finish the tour with a traditional Greek coffee or a drink before returning to our starting point.

Minimum of 2 people required: Start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation upon arrangement.

Price for the trip: 51€ per person.

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Lunch in Melinda incl. wine or beer and water, coffee or refreshment in Akrasi) is 18€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

Day trip “Boat trip around Gera”

Duration including stops: appr. 6 hours (plus transfer from your accommodation)

The trip: We pick you up at your accommodation and take you to the Gulf of Gera. In Perama, a little harbour village beside the gulf we board our boat and meet our skipper. Once on board our small fishing boat we cruise gently on the quiet water and show you the remains of ancient Gera village. The old Gera was almost completely destroyed by a major earthquake and disappeared in the Gulf of Gera.

From the boat we can see the ruins of the old city under the water and of course the stunning scenery along the gulf coast. During the boat trip we visit the lovely little islands of St. Hermogenes and St. Taxiarches, where we stop at the most appealing places. You may use the breaks for swimming, diving or snorkeling in the clear water, photography or simply just to relax on our little boat.

The final destination of our boat trip for the day is the splendid remote bay of Tarti. Here you can enjoy a coffee or other drink from a taverna right on the beach, and perhaps order a light snack or lunch – whatever you fancy. After a good time at Tarti, our relaxing and interesting day comes to an end. We head back to the harbour in Perama and drive you back to your accommodation.

Start time and pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Price for the day trip: for 5 people or more 50 € per person (pick-up from your accommodation, boat trip with a local skipper, drink in Tarti).
For less people or larger groups, prices on request.

Two-days trip “Delightful South“

We start our trip in Kalloni. Heading east we visit the Roman aqueduct of Moria. The aqueduct spans a length of 170 meters over a wide valley of olive groves and offers some spectacular sights. In the lovely village of Moria we stop by a local kafenion for a traditional Greek coffee. We continue our trip and reach the Hot Springs of Gera. If you want you can enjoy a bath in the recently renovated spa and perhaps a refreshing dip in the sea afterwards.

From sea level on narrow roads we climb up towards the highest peak of Lesvos, Mount Olympus (968m). From above we enjoy spectacular views over most parts of the island. Through shady chestnut forests we descend on dirt roads to the picturesque mountain village Agiassos with its famous Church of the Virgin Mary – an important pilgrims’ destination. We take some time to explore the village of narrow streets and small shops.

Continuing towards the south coast, we show you a quarry; where in the past crystals were excavated. You will still find some interesting stones and crystals there. From the ridge of the mountain we enjoy fascinating views over the Gulf of Gera and finally we arrive at Toumba Eco Farm, where we will stay for the night. In the evening Margarita will prepare a traditional, homemade meal for us in her rustic farm house.

On the next morning – after a tasty breakfast with local specialities – we start our trip and descend to the picturesque fishing town of Plomari, the site of a number of acclaimed ouzo distilleries.  We visit the ouzo museum of Barbayiannis – where you will see the original alembic (made in 1858) and other equipment used here in the past.   Here we have the opportunity to taste some Barbayannis ouzos  - which is considered by many to be the best in Greece.

We continue to the stunning bay of Tarti, where we spend some time relaxing at the beach or swimming in its crystal clear water. From here we take you to the historical village of Skopelos, where we can visit the underground channels under the church. People with claustrophobia, however, may prefer to wait outside.

Along the Gulf of Gera we head north, then inland. Just off the road before we reach Kalloni are the ruins of the Temple of Messa, in ancient times the most important temple on the island, built 4th Century BC and dedicated to Zeus, Dionysos & Hera. We visit the temple area and then return to Kalloni. In one of the local Kafenions we sit down for an ouzo or coffee to end our delightful trip.

Minimum of 2 people required: Start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Price for the trip: 110€ per person (incl. overnight stay at Toumba in a stonehouse for 2 people with breakfast).

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Coffee in Moria, entrance fee to the Gera Hot Springs, dinner incl. wine or beer and water, entrance to the temple of Mesa, coffee or ouzo in Kalloni) is 26€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.
