Trips in the west

Day trip “The West and Skala Eressou”

Duration including stops:  appr.  8 hours

The trip: We start our tour in Kalloni and drive through a beautiful mountainous landscape with great views to the west. On a striking stone peak, an extinct volcano, we see the monastery Moni Ipsilou, which was founded around the year 800 AD. We visit the monastery and have a look around the old dignified buildings.

We now continue to the Petrified Forest, one of the highlights of Western Lesvos. This is not the only area where you can find fossilized redwoods, but certainly the most imposing place. The forest of giant sequoias was petrified (a word from Greek – remember Greek ‘petra’ = stone!) about 20 million years ago, buried under ashes by a volcanic eruption. Hot Springs watered the trunks with mineral waters, which ultimately led to the petrification. Depending on the light the trunks shimmer in all imaginable colours. A great sight and a terrific place!

After a walk through the lovely park, we continue our drive through an impressive landscape, formed by volcanos and come to Eressos and finally to the beach settlement of Skala Eressou. There we stop at the long beach for swimming in the clear water or just relaxing. Later we meet up again for a late tasty lunch in one of the stylish beach tavernas.

On the way back along the south coast road and Gulf of Kalloni we stop at the tiny village of Parakila. There we find an appealing old stone bridge close to the main road and the picturesque ruins of a mosque with a minaret still standing from the Turkish period.

Minimum of 2 people required: Start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation upon arrangement.

Price for the trip: 55€ per person.

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Entrance fees/donation to the monastery and the Petrified Forest, lunch in Skala Eressou incl. wine or beer and water, coffee or refreshment in Kalloni) is 20€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.

If you want to see the monastery you need to wear appropriate clothes - long trousers or skirt and no bare shoulders or midriffs! (wear a sleeved top, or you could bring a cotton scarf to cover up.)

Nature trip to the volcanic west of Lesvos

This unforgettable trip takes you to the volcanic west of Lesvos. We guide you through untouched natural landscape to a fairytale forest with volcanic rock and unique flora. Wild yellow rhododendrons bloom there in May and June - a true splendor. We head up to the peak of Mount Ilias (895m) and to the famous taverna of Liota, where you can enjoy a tasty lunch.

We continue to Ancient Antissa. According to an old legend, the head and lyre of Orpheus was washed up on the beach - still singing and playing. We no longer hear the lyre playing, but you can sometimes find small, stranded fragments of fossilized sequoia trees on the beach, from the time that the nearby Sigri ancient forest was petrified by volcanic lava.

Minimum of 2 people required: Start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation upon arrangement.

Price for the day trip for 2 persons 85 € p.p., for 3 persons 75 € p.p., 4 persons and more on request (Lunch incl.)

Day trip “The Northwest – Legends and Stories”

Duration including stops:  appr.  8 hours

The trip: We start our tour in Kalloni. From here we drive to the nearby monastery of Leimonos. This monastery of friars was already built before the Turkish occupation. It was often destroyed and rebuilt; the current building dating back to 1527. Moni Leimonos is one of the most interesting monasteries in Lesvos – we take some time to look around this splendid building.

In the village of Filia we visit the lovely plateia and enjoy a Greek coffee and Greek hospitality in the local kafeinion. In Filia you can also find the remaining of a Turkish mosque with the minaret and a beautiful medieval bridge.

From here we head to the volcanic west of the island, towards the village of Sigri. You can see along the road the excavated trunks of petrified sequoias. The forest of giant sequoias was petrified (a word from Greek – remember Greek ‘petra’ = stone!) about 20 million years ago, buried under ashes by a volcanic eruption. Hot Springs watered the trunks with mineral waters, which ultimately led to the petrification. In Sigri we visit the Natural History Museum, which will give you a great idea of the volcanic history of the island.

Before we leave the west we will stop at one of the most beautiful sandy beaches of Lesvos – Faneromeni Beach – with its stunning rock church.

In the tiny village of Liotta we stop in a lovely taverna with a spring under an enormous plane tree and enjoy a tasty meal.

Feeling stronger we return through the volcanic landscape to our starting point.

Minimum of 2 people required: Start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation upon arrangement.

Price for the trip: 55€ per person.

The extra-charge for our 👑 package (Entrance fees/donation to the monastery and the Petrified Forest, lunch in Skala Eressou incl. wine or beer and water, coffee or refreshment in Kalloni) is 26€ per person.

Prices for larger groups (>10 people) on request.
